What Is an Awning?

An awning is a shelter consisting of sheets of durable and weatherproof material attached to the exterior of your home or business. Similar to a roof, awnings provide shade and shelter from the elements. Awnings are built over windows and doors to shield from glaring sun, rain, wind and UV radiation.

Unlike canopies, awnings are permanent fixtures, however it is possible to opt for a retractable awning that you can easily fold away when not required. At Starlight Blinds, we offer a range of designs, styles and colours to match the architecture and requirements of any home or business.

Awning Size Guide

So, you may be asking yourself what size awning do I need? In this section of the guide we will provide you with everything you need to know about awning sizes. Here’s our awning size chart.

Awning Sizes

MeasurementHow to Measure
WidthThe width refers to the length of the wall or window mounted bar that attaches to the material. In simple terms, this is the horizontal line along which you are wanting the awning fitted.
Use a tape measure across the window or door to get an estimation of the width required. Measure across any gutters, as awnings can be fitted on brackets in front of those.
ProjectionThe projection of the awning refers to how far it extends out from the window or door. The projection needs to be around 0.5m less than the width of the awning to support the overall structure.
The level of projection depends on how much shade and shelter you require.
PitchThe pitch of the awning refers to the angle of it. This is calculated by the person completing the measuring service.

With Starlight Blinds, you don’t need to worry about taking precise measurements and getting everything completely accurate as we provide a free consultation and measuring service where we will work with your needs to provide you with the best awning for your home or business. What Are the Benefits of Awnings?

Awnings offer a range of benefits to both home and business owners. Here’s just some of the advantages.

Benefits of Patio Awning

Adding an awning to your home can not only block harmful UV rays, but it can cool your home much more efficiently than blinds or drapes. This can lead to a reduction in energy bills, helping you to save money and reduce your carbon footprint! Awnings are also extremely low maintenance, made with water-repellent materials that are resistant to fading and discolouration.

Patio awning is great for enhancing your garden and providing you with a sheltered space to enjoy in all weathers, adding value to your home without costly renovations. At Starlight Blinds, we work closely with our clients to understand their needs and choose the perfect awning style to suit their home.

Benefits of Business Awning

Restaurants, cafes, pubs and other businesses can benefit massively from updating the look of their commercial space with an awning. Not only do awnings expand usable space allowing you to place more tables and chairs outdoors, increasing custom, awnings are more comfortable for your customers providing them with the shade and shelter they require.

Awnings improve visibility of a business by providing a more eye-catching display that easily separates it from other businesses in the same location. They also provide a promotional opportunity to display a brand or logo.

Awnings can be incredibly money-saving too, reducing energy bills by providing shade so that you don’t have to spend as much money on air conditioning.

Awning Types

Every home and business is different so choosing the best type of awning for your requirements can depend on various factors. Here’s a breakdown of the different awning types.

Fixed Awnings

Fixed awnings are attached to the building’s exterior and do not move. These are permanent fixtures that are extremely reliable and secure, built to withstand the harshest of elements.

The only downside to a fixed awning is that it can not be moved once it is built so be sure it is the right solution for you.

Portable Awnings

Portable awnings are similar to canopies, also known as freestanding awnings, these can be moved from one place to another. Portable awnings are extremely convenient as they can be moved around to follow the sun’s path so you are always in the shade.

A disadvantage to the portable awning is that it is not as sturdy as a fixed structure.

Retractable Awnings

Retractable awnings can be folded or rolled up offering great flexibility. When you’re wanting to soak up the sun, you can retract the awning and when you’re wanting full protection from the elements you can fold it back out.

At Starlight Blinds, we offer a range of additional extras such as sun and wind sensors, which automatically open and close the awning. Contact us today to find out more.
